My ode to grits

Shrimp and grits. A southern staple. A classic. For those of you who have never had grits, consider me shocked. Moving up north, I realized how many people haven’t tried what I thought was a main component of a Saturday morning breakfast. This had me questioning my identity. Am I really a southerner? All my life, us South Floridians have always felt separate from the rest of Florida and the south in general. We didn’t have a southern accent, or eat chitlins or gator and (most of us) didn’t vote for Trump. Southern hospitality? Not even sure what that is but, grits have somehow been one southern thing that I can say is apart of my cultural identity. At least when it comes to food anyway. You can find this tasty dish at The Corner Social located in my hood of Harlem. Not only did it combine all of the great flavors of shrimp, sausage and tomato sauce, it looked good while doing it. I am excited to continue to search for restaurants that rise up to my standard of a good shrimp and grits while simultaneously staying in touch with my “southern” roots.
